Beyond the Dark Veil

I work with performance and theatrics to construct visual storytelling, often from folk tales. Beyond the Dark Veil is a photographic narrative heavily influenced by my grandparent’s retelling of Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte. Santa Muerte is a female deity or folk saint originating from Mexico. She is a personification of death and is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her beloved devotees. She helps you find comfort and peace in knowing you’ve finally reached the end of a world where there’s no more pain and suffering, only happiness.

As a child, this story had always produced fear, but as I got older, I became intrigued by my mind’s ability to push meaning from a conscious to a more subconscious experience. Beyond the Dark Veil depicts life and death in the here and now. Since becoming pregnant, I have begun to contemplate mortality and life in a profound way and found the process of making this work a means to embrace life.
