Madi Southerland

My work explores themes of feminine sexuality, erotica, and the human form. I typically work from a broad range of resource materials that I then take from and begin sketching in my notes the piece of work I want to make, writing notes about the size, shape, color, medium, etc.… My works range in mediums, from wood, paper, paint, metal, fabric, and so on, my goal being to choose mediums that best express the concepts formed in my notes. The works themselves hold an unsettling quality to them, my goal being to elicit some emotion from the viewer- typically inciting intrigue and/or discomfort through the juxtaposition of the twisted forms and bright color palette. I take inspiration from the Impressionists and the Pop Art movement on their expressive uses of color and form; more so, I pull from contemporary artists that employ BDSM culture and traditional Japanese bondage, Shibari. The work I produce contains a graphic quality through the use of color to abstract the female body, following the contours of the body in my own language of color and shape.
