Morgan Cooper

My work consists of installations and 3-dimensional soft and hard sculptures. The subject matter vacillates between atmospheric, utopian and other-worldly escapism motivated by reflections on capitalism. Materials used in my body of work operate symbolically to support the targeted message, often with the intention of translating an emotional tangibility. Sand is a common material I utilize, representing an emotional weight, heaviness and groundedness. Manipulation of materials through methods of layering transparency are intended to symbolize a presence of time and psychology. Historical artists I am inspired by and refer to during my own process, are post-minimalists and post-modernists. I am inspired by Eva Hesse’s materialistic explorative process with roots in the psychological and Donald Judd’s theoretical approach to object making as described in his short essay Special Objects.
